the Rialto theater
The Rialto Theatre made its debut in 1937 in historic downtown Hannibal, Missouri. Perhaps “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” played here as it premiered that year as well. Locals recall heading to the Rialto with two dimes in hand— one for admission and one for popcorn and a Coca-cola. A gallon of gas was 10 cents as well…”a movie date cost me less than a dollar back in the day” a long time Hannibalian recalls. The cinema was booming during this time period, however with the onslaught of the television era in the 1950’s, families began staying in for their entertainment. The Rialto closed in 1955.
In 2017, the Rialto changed ownership and a year long renovation occurred. Today, the Rialto offers a space for private events with capacity to seat 350 people and 800 standing. The venue can also be used for smaller events as it includes two areas; The Sole Room and the Vinyl Room, seating for 250 and 100 respectively.
